FILM ANALYSIS: Narrative Narrative is the combination of a film's story elements, its production elements, and its audience. Literally speaking, Narrative refers to a film's plot, or story line, but to understand a film requires knowledge of far more than simply what happens in the film's story.
All Narrative films aim to have the audience make a connection with the characters, and take the journey of the film's plot along with them. This is known as "audience engagement", which simply means the audience are interested in what is happening in the film, and should therefore enjoy the ride.
To engage an audience, a film maker will employ Production Elements - the visual language of film that modern audiences are familiar with, usually on a subconscious level - and Story Elements - the way the story is constructed.
