The Ashwood College Media Faculty runs a program from Year 8 to Year 12, covering film making, photography, film analysis, photojournalism, and of course VCE studies.

VIDEO HITS : Stage 2
In this unit students will explore all aspects of popular music video production. The introduction will familiarise students with the different styles and features within a variety of genres. Students will then be making and recording their own music videos. They will use video making skills and basic production steps to plan and make music videos as well as promotional material like CD covers and posters.

MASHED UP MOVIES : Stage 3
Students will investigate movie genres by looking at horror. They will create their own films, mash up movie posters and trash movie trailers. Students will explore various software and hardware, using video cameras, Photoshop, editing and sound mixing software.

ADAPTATION : Stage 3
This unit looks at narrative components and how literary texts can be translated effectively to the medium of film. Students will be required to read several literary texts and scripts and view a variety of film adaptations. In response to these texts, students will produce a folio of writing comprising, interpretive, creative and analytical responses. Students will also study film techniques along with character presentations, costumes, settings, lighting, music and sound effects.

PHOTOGRAPHY : Stage 4
In this unit students will learn the theories and practices of photography using digital SLR cameras. More than just ‘point and shoot’, they will learn techniques, strategies and explore how to control time, light and space as they build their own photographic portfolios. The portfolios including low light photography, action/sports photography, portraits and other technical challenges regarding focus, framing and exposure. They will research their own and others artworks and learn about image control and editing in post-production in Photoshop.

The media has a significant impact on young people’s lives. Therefore, this unit will focus on the relationship between the media and society as well as the impact of technology on the media. Students will focus on developing their practical and analytical skills. They will look at the contribution of codes and conventions in media presentations as well as the cultural implications of new media technologies. Students will also investigate the specialist production stages and roles within media production and will be introduced to media industry issues through practical involvement in the media production process.

PHOTOJOURNALISM : Stage 4
This unit will look at present day issues and how the Media represents them. You will develop your photography and print production skills to make your own magazines, complete with photos and articles. During this course you will develop an Understanding of the process of producing print media, and how the process of representation shapes the way we all view the issues that affect our lives every day.

VCE Media examines media products as the expression of creative ideas, specific symbolic languages and discourses of society and culture that shape meaning and reflect the society in which they were created. This study explores a variety of media forms, including audio, audiovisual media, print-based media, digital and interactive media technologies and convergent media processes. Students examine and analyse the relationships between audiences and the media; this analysis is undertaken through a theoretical and practical study that places the student in the role of a media creator.
